My school services students from kindergarten through 5th grade. These students may be from the tiny borough of Bath in Pennsylvania, but they are BIG readers! We use a reading and writing program that revolves around novels to create great readers and writers.
Reading interests can vary, but they all have something in common- a mutual love for reading!
It's not uncommon to hear conversations comparing the writings of Kate DiCamillo to Katherine Applegate or other accomplished authors. When given the opportunity, children can develop a love for and connection with great literature.
My favorite thing about the students of my school is their genuine interest in reading. Through all of our reading endeavors, they constantly add new authors and genres to their "have read" pile of books.
My Project
This Donors Choose project was born out of a need to get below level books for my 2nd and 3rd grade students. They will be used for independent reading as well as during small group reading practice. Students will have the option of bringing these titles home to read on their own as well as with their families.
No matter what reading level a student is at, they deserve to have a plethora of stories to choose from.
As students get older but struggle with reading, they can sometimes feel as though they don't have as many options as their peers. High interest, low readability books engage all readers.
In particular, the Mister Shivers books are going to be a great addition to the school collection for students who want to be able to read books like Goosebumps but aren't able to read at that level.
