My Project

The focus on cultural responsiveness originated from the book “Cultural Responsiveness and the Brain” by Zerita Hammond. It legitimizes our collective effort to grow our students academically and socially. Research has shown that belonging leads to engagement. Students that feel socially outcasted or rejected suffer a neurological response in the brain similar to physical pain. Studies on race and academic achievement has proven that BIPOC students whose identity and cultural backgrounds aren’t accepted struggle within the classroom. In short, students who aren’t taught from an awareness of their cultural identity can’t learn well.

Cultural Responsiveness charges our educators to become aware of their own bias and understand their own identities to become credible educators.

It emphasizes the work we must do as educators to learn about a students’ “funds of knowledge” in order to build relationships. Therefore, additional training and professional learning is needed for my team to gain the intellect to facilitate this work . Reducing bias then can be a community and institutional initiative. Our targets enable our department to use bought resources to transform our classroom libraries, strengthen family connections, and increase cultural awareness using local professionals and community partners. The work that we do within our classrooms can be extended to our students’ families to bridge “the trust gap.”
