My Students

Cudahy & Bell Students Need to Breathe for Change!

I need financial assistance for a 200-hour wellness and yoga teacher training designed specifically for educators.

I teach at a school where 95% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 67% are English learners. Only an average of 47% of adults living within my school's zip code graduate from high school. The students I work with every day battle tremendous challenges, but they are incredibly bright and resilient and they will make tremendous progress this year despite the challenges they face. It would be fantastic to be able to address some of their socio-emotional needs by teaching them mindfulness and yoga.

The weight that many of my students carry on their shoulders is far beyond what any seven-year-old should have to handle. They deal with poverty, gangs, crowded living situations, and many witness violence far too often, but nonetheless, 20 bubbly faces bounce into my classroom each morning eager to learn.

I am so grateful to know each of them and their families. My goal for each one of my students is for them to graduate from high school and to attend college.

My Project

I have been an elementary teacher for 25 years. I love my career! However, being a teacher is very stressful and constantly demanding at so many levels. At this point in my job, I feel the need to learn how to practice mindfulness. I strongly believe that this training will help me cope with the stresses that I encounter on a daily basis as a busy teacher working in a low socio-economic area. I am confident that this training will increase my ability to be present and respond more adequately to my students in a positive manner.

I envision that my classroom will become a calmer, more productive place as I learn to meet my students' socio-emotional needs better.

Imagine my third graders practicing yoga and mindfulness. I would love to have the opportunity to be trained

through this program designed specifically for educators.
