Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

At 9 am every day, hundreds of "at risk" students walk through the front door. That in itself it a miracle. My school strives to create an environment of respect and responsibility. We are a Title I school, with a high percentage of minority students. They don't dream a lot about their future because they think it doesn't hold much hope for them. Our school is situated in a gang infested, crime riddled neighborhood, and our students have been focusing on fostering a Growth Mindset. Hopes of college are alive and well in the hallways because they know that their options are limited. Our students are bright and hungry, but our resources are limited.

Students will develop important Growth Mindset skills as they build inspirational flyers and banners to encourage them to do their best work. Each student will create an inspirational flyer that will be converted to a poster utilizing some awesome donations (printers) we received last year. My students need visual reminders of the great things they are destined for. We do not have a formal art class, so student-created visuals are sparse in the hallways and classrooms. Working together to create these banners, students will build collaborative strategies that will help them be a great team player now and in the future.

In Their Own Words

We need to have posters that help us stay on track. We made the highest gains in the district in math and the second highest gains in the district in ELA. We want to keep doing a good job so people don't think our school is just a bad school.

Eric P.

When we work together to make something that helps everyone do their best, we learn team building and collaboration. We need to work together in so many ways in our lives. Not just in school. We need to learn how to help each other be their best so we can learn good skills for life. We can inspire each other to be good examples.

Christian G.

This project will help us make banners and posters for the school that make us feel good about ourselves and our school. We always hear how bad our school is because we are in a bad part of town and we don't have a lot of money for things. But we are learning and want to help each other go to college. Our community believes in us and when the parents and other people come to our school, they will see that we believe in ourselves too.
