My Students

I would like my students to explore different methods of growing produce. In my STEM class, we rely on the scientific method to test ideas of what will work, not work, and what will work the best. I want students to explore safely and not be afraid of failure in a controlled environment.

Students come from varied backgrounds.

Over the past 5 years, I have found more of them and their families relying on local food banks. Teaching different growing techniques will allow them to provide for their families and families in our community. Our school is mostly rural and the students are very interested in both traditional methods of planting and hydroponics. Many students are interested in joining Future Farmers Of America when they leave the middle school and attend the high school. This opportunity will allow them to have more knowledge entering the high school. It is my hope that this might also become an area of interest for them in college and as a career. Many farming communities are like ours. Tradition is being replaced by more current and faster ways of producing for an ever growing population. These students deserve the opportunity to learn, explore, and experiment with these methods and not be held back due to their economic status.

My Project

Students will use a greenhouse that is on campus to grow plants the traditional way in soil. They would like for all plants to be grown organically so that they lack chemical influence. The students need the soil, seeds, and pots that are being requested in order to grow vegetables in a traditional method. The students would also explore hydroponics to grow vegetables. We need the warming mat and the hydroponics starter kit to begin the germination of our seeds. Students will then keep some growing using hydroponics. They want to gather data to see if one method is better than the other as far as output and speed of growth.

Students will learn methods of planting that could benefit them in the future by supplying food for their families.

Any food not consumed by students here at school will be donated to a local food bank so that we positively impact the community around us. Supplying fresh, organic produce to families is important to the students. Opening their eyes to possible careers and employment is my hope.
