Being Fit=Being Fantastic

My Students

I teach elementary physical education in a multi-culturally diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged urban neighborhood. I have kids from all walks of life, mostly African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic.

When I first walked into my equipment closet, I noticed the school was in need of many items.

The school budget is tight and there isn't much left for equipment.

My students come from many types of homes (broken, single-parent, raised by relatives and foster children). When they come to my class, I want them to leave our school remembering all of the fun they had in physical education class and how much wonderful equipment they were given the chance to use and knowing that fitness and physical activity is fun. I want to give them experiences they won't get at any other school. I want them to have experiences no other students have had anywhere else.

My Project

I am in the market for a creative way my students can get physically fit. I would like fitness cue cards and the pyramids that hold them upright so I can set up stations around the gym to promote fitness and make it fun. The pyramids allow the students to read the cue card so they don't have to read it off the floor and I don't have to put tape on my walls. Childhood obesity is a national epidemic and the United States is known as the fattest country in the world. In today's busy time, life sometimes is easiest when you have a fast-food chain you can turn to in a pinch. Sometimes people turn to fast-food, not only because its fast, but also easy. However, fast-food also is loaded with high amounts of fat and cholesterol and salt. All 3 contributing components of heart disease Heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans. Please help me fight it in our youngsters.
