My students need additional Social Studies resources such as News-2-You, Scholastic News, and additional copies of Time for Kids for independent home practice.
What makes my students special? They have me for a teacher! This is my second year teaching and my students 6th year in school. My students come from a community that is in need. The school is the only place where I can address their needs and put them first. But meeting needs is not something I can do alone. It takes a village to raise a child, therefore it takes a community to help a classroom.
I believe that all children are capable of learning and deserve the tools to make learning possible.
At our school, we are committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure student academic and social-emotional growth while providing equal educational opportunities in a safe and nurturing learning environment.
My Project
Recently my students have had the chance to use Time for Kids magazine and they LOVE IT! All of the feedback from my students has been nothing but positivity. I love hearing their reasons for why they enjoy this particular reading.
"I love reading about current events because they relate to me today".
This is a quote from one of my 5th-grade students. As a whole, I see students more engaged in the work that we do when it relates to current events. With this funding, I hope to get more Social Studies resources meant for children that relate to current events.
News-2-You is a wonderful resource I had the pleasure of using when I was a student teacher. The materials are leveled so any reader can understand. There are always pictures to go along with the articles just like a real newspaper. Additionally, there are comprehension questions to gauge the students understanding of the reading.
Scholastic News is wonderful because it allows students to not only read, but there are wonderful color pictures to go along with the story. They are weekly published and even include an online option so students can read them anywhere.
Lastly, my students need additional copies of Time for Kids. I have the pleasure of using them currently in the classroom but there are not enough copies for each group of students to take home. Every week, every student I teach wants to take home the latest copy.
