Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The MLK student body consists of 773 students representing African-Americans (77.6%), Hispanics (13.8%), Caucasians (4.9%), Asians (2.3%), Multi-Racial/Others (0.8%), and Native Americans (0.5%). The gender make-up is 49% male and 51% female. Three percent of students are identified as academically gifted, 12.2% eligible for Exceptional Children's (EC) services; 9.1% as Limited English Proficiency, and 81.1% receive free and/or reduced lunch. The school is identified as Title I Targeted Assistance.
Many of our students see the life of criminal activity as the best option to make money quickly. Many of them cannot read or hate to read. However, I have found a book, "How to Be a Successful Criminal," that changes all of this for students. I had read the entire book and photocopied sections because I do not have a class set. I even spent $300 of my personal money to purchase the student workbooks to go with the book. I had two students learn to read with this book, and many changed lifestyles and chose not to be in gangs or involved in criminal activity. Overall, the book has given hope to students that thought they were doomed to stay in the criminal lifestyle forever. I would like to have a classroom set of 30 of these books do that the students could read it individually or in groups.
The book tells the story of Ron Glodoski, a rough man with an amazing life of abuse, low self-esteem, drug addiction, gang life, and jail time. The story is written in a manner that is easy for the students to understand, and it is about topics to which they can relate. The book takes traits of criminals and demonstrates how the trait can be transferred into a positive, legal career. The book ends by saying, "Sure, I can teach you how to get rich in nine months, but the nine month plan ends in a funeral."
This book can be used to teach the nonfiction genre, character traits, self-exploration, grammar, and writing.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
