Cicero states, "A room without books is like body without a soul." A great book will transport the reader to distant lands, carry them through mighty adventures and allow them to escape their lives for a while. A high quality classroom library allows for student voice and choice in reading.
My students are as diverse in their cultures as they are in their book choices.
They come from a variety of backgrounds and socioeconomic classes. Many have a passion for reading and crave more choices in the books that they read. I have spent the last eight years building my classroom library. It is a great start, but it needs more selections to pique the interests of my young readers. A diverse classroom library will allow my students the voice and choice they so crave when it comes to selecting the best book for them.
My Project
New, high interest books, will add to the diversity of my classroom library. While the reading of high quality literature is completed in class, students are also required to read thirty minutes daily as homework as well. I strongly believe that it is up to the classroom teacher to attract young readers to great books. My book shelves have every genre and multiple reading levels: picture books, chapter books, fiction, and nonfiction. Providing more chapter books that are of high interest to my students will teach them how to choose books that are right for them, and guide them down a path of imagination and discovery. My students need high interest novels in their classroom library. These books include: Fish in a Tree, The Crossover, and Steelheart.
It is proven that reading improves a student's vocabulary, writing skills, analytical thinking skills and test scores.
Reading opens the doors to college and beyond. It arms students against oppression and will prepare them for the rigors of work. Creating young, avid readers now will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
