Behavioral Arts: Exploring Our Emotions Through Art

My students need art supplies such as watercolor paper, paintbrushes, watercolor crayons, markers, Mod Podge and other items so that we can utilize Educational Neuroscience and Art to explore past traumatic experiences.

My Students

My students are the ones who have tough exteriors for a variety of reasons. They act out in ways which might be challenging in a typical school setting. For their benefit, they are removed from their home school and come to our school to hone in on what makes each of them behave the way they do. It is our hope that they will be able to transition back to their school with a growth mindset.

We are all different types of learners.

Many of our students learn best outside of the traditional classroom and so they flourish in a different environment.

We know that building relationships is an opportunity that might not be available in all school settings, but our students have shown that they thrive most when we can connect with them.

My Project

My students come from many walks of life. Each of them has a story they can share in their own words.

The personal story of each student allows them to use their voice.

At times, it is next to impossible to put some things into words and can be better explored through brief but powerful art projects.

Because we are an Alternative school, our students do not have access to many electives such as Art class. We are learning through our students successes that emotional outlets provide the opportunity to recognize and change their mindset enough, that perhaps without even realizing it, they too will succeed.

With items such as Vegetable Glycerin and Karo Syrup, our students will make sensory bottles. They will be able to work on focused attention practices with this project. Eventually, we would like to see our students teaching others how to take deep breaths and calm their emotions. Using butcher paper, our students will explore the concept of body image by drawing what they think they look like on the outside. Using copy paper, we will create repeated patterns inside structured shapes as a calming therapeutic practice. We will write words on symbolic comedy/tragedy masks, indicating those things which we do on the outside that do not accurately represent who we are on the inside. These will be destroyed as we remove our masks and learn how to become who we truly are.
