My Students

I teach in a Title I school in Norman, Oklahoma, where nearly 98% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. In my role as a Behavior Interventionist, I serve all of our 540 students, many of whom have experienced trauma in some capacity. We help provide various supports for our students academically, emotionally, and behaviorally.

We teach our students how to behave, by what we allow, what we stop, what we ignore, and what we reinforce.

My Project

As one of 4 behavioral interventionists in our district, it is my honor to serve the students at K.E.S. Through my position, I am able to help give students the break their bodies need in order to process the big emotions they are feeling.

So much of what our students experience is expressed through their bodies, which can't always process what is going on.

The tools you support in this project will allow me to offer more choices to students when their bodies become unregulated. Activities such as swinging, playing with fidgets, and sitting in a comfortable space, will allow their bodies to de-escalate during sensory breaks, in turn allowing their minds to process the emotions they are experiencing. These tools will also allow students to practice self-regulation strategies that I teach in my classroom during small group and individual instruction.
