Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first year teacher in first grade at a low income school in Chicago. Many of my students began this year not knowing the letter sounds, and some didn't even know all of the letters in the alphabet. On the other end of the spectrum, I have a few students who are reading chapter books. My low students often feel discouraged when they see their peers devouring books that they are unable to enjoy. I would love to get leveled books that begin at a very easy level and develop sentence length and complexity further on. As my lowest readers master a book, they become VERY excited. I believe that having these sets would help them to choose books that are "just right" for them, as well as motivate them to continue to work hard to master increasingly difficult books. Right now, I have very few books that are appropriate for beginning readers. This gift would absolutely increase reading proficiency in my classroom!
