My Students
My students are enthusiastic learners who come to school ready to take in the day's educational adventures. Most of my students come from low income families, so the majority of the items (ranging from basic school supplies to books to facial tissues and more) are supplied by me.
Not only is our school inner-city, it is a home: a home where we foster literacy and learning while having fun.
Instruction is rigorous and the students are held accountable for their learning. Teachers and students build solid and rewarding relationships built on respect and the understanding that we are a team, and our one focus is them, the students.
My class consists of 18 second graders who come to school ready to learn, but not always prepared. I often supply them with basic school supply needs. Most of the books they have access to come from my personal classroom library.
My Project
I am requesting 6 copies of each of the Mercy Watson chapter books for my second graders to use during guided reading and book study groups.
Kate DiCamillo is a fantastic author, and her books are fun, engaging, and exactly what my students need.
The Mercy Watson series she created is the perfect transition from picture books to chapter books my second graders need. The books still have colorful and imaginative illustrations to accompany the text, but the length and chapters make these books perfect for 7 and 8 year old students.
The books will be used in guided reading groups, where the students will read a chapter at a time and I will guide them through a discussion and literacy activity for each chapter. Some students will use them in a group setting, without my guidance, in a book study format where the students will support each other in a discussion and literacy activity.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
