This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, fun-loving middle schoolers from South Los Angeles. This is a special education English and Reading Intervention class for 7th and 8th graders.
Though they are in middle school, most are performing below 3rd grade level in the area of reading.
My small class sizes are able to give them that one-on-one personal attention needed to improve their reading and writing skills. They also support and help each other with different group projects that focus on both basic and more sophisticated reading skills.
My Project
Every day my students read for 15 - 20 minutes. This can and is a daunting challenge for my students for 2 reasons: 1) They are teenagers who would rather play and talk; and 2) Reading has been an extreme struggle for them their whole educational career.
My students are in 7th and 8th grade but have a reading processing disability that has placed them 3, 4 and some even 6 grades below.
I have some who struggle to read and spell "you." My class uses a combination of computerized reading games, small group reading activities and independent reading. The best way to entice them to read more often is to give them books on their level that they can read. The books I've requested here fulfill both of these requirements. Please support the students by helping me add these books to our classroom library.
