We all like to feel that we are important and that we belong. This is no different for the pregnant or parenting teen attending high school.
My students are those who have not felt that they fit in or can be successful at a traditional high school.
The reasons for this are as diverse as they are, but may include medical issues, pregnancy and parenting, anxiety, family instability or general frustration with a high school environment.
At my school, a student may work towards the mastery of a course as quickly as she likes and may have the opportunity to catch up or even graduate early!
My Project
Our school does not have a library or media center provided by our district. Seven years ago, I began our little library by bringing in my own materials to a small closet in my classroom. With the help of generous and caring parents and community members, my collection has grown! One thing I have not been able to provide, however, are materials for our pregnant and parenting students. I think it is imperative that students with children feel that school is a welcoming place for them and that they bring a focus on education into their homes and to their own little ones.
Literacy is the key! The simple act of reading stories to a child is not only educational, but provides a bonding and nurturing time between parent and child. I envision my pregnant and parenting students choosing materials from this collection and sharing the joy of reading with their children!
Our school is focused on helping students stay in school and continue their educations.
It is important for students to feel like they are a part of the school and that they are valued. I feel that having resources about pregnancy and parenting available to students will help them to feel seen and valued here. I also believe that providing board books that can be checked out and read to a little one at home will help to cement the school/home connection.
