This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I believe when given many opportunities and encouragement, every child can learn to love to read! I would love for my students to have as many outlets as possible to enjoy literature!
My students live in a high-poverty area and do not have access to a lot of reading materials at home.
For this reason, I try to provide an enriching classroom library and listening center for them. I truly believe that the more children are encouraged and given opportunities to read, the better readers they will become.
My Project
I am requesting first individual listening centers. I would love for students, especially struggling readers, to have opportunities to listen to classroom selections and preview upcoming material. Moreover, listening to books on CD gives students the chance to hear modeled fluent readers and they can mimic those fluent readers themselves. Finally, having individual listening centers is a way for students to enjoy books they love, in a cozy and personal place in the classroom, to encourage a love of reading.
I would also love for students to have a subscription to Scholastic News. Kids actually LOVE to talk about current events and non-fiction and this medium is excellent to introduce those topics to them. I feel it is important that children feel as though they are a part of a community and the world.
Oftentimes, I make my student's laugh because I love the smell of books and smell them in front of them!
I cry at the sad parts in Charlotte's Web and tear up during the last part of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. They giggle, but later I see them checking out those same books to read to themselves, or secretly smelling a new, crisp book themselves. I want them to become readers not just for their personal success in life, but for their personal enjoyment.
