My Project
"Becoming the United States..." is a part of Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History's Traveling Exhibition. This unique exhibition consists of seven free-standing panels, up to twenty-four feet long. The exhibition contains historical information spanning from the colonial period to Reconstruction.
My students are part of a Title 1 District in Houston, Texas.
Many of the students at my campus have never been to a museum, left their community, or ever traveled outside of Texas. This exhibition will allow them to do all of those things. They will have an exceptional learning experience utilizing the excellent curriculum, created by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. They will be able to have a museum experience, virtually travel to another time and place; all while still remaining at school.
The curriculum presented in this exhibition, strongly supports our district social studies curriculum and the state assessment that the students must take in April. As students are rarely ever able to take field trips, they are likewise; not exposed to dynamic historical documents and information such as this. The value of the exposure to the primary sources, supplemental resources and online component cannot be understated.
The "Becoming the United States..." exhibition will make a significant impact towards the growth and development of approximately six hundred Houston students. It will provide them with learning opportunities that they would not be able to have otherwise.
