My Students
My class is a self-contained special education classroom within one of the lowest socioeconomic elementary schools in our area. We live in a military community which means many of these kids have moved several times and endure frequent separations from their families.
My class is the only one of its kind in our district--every student placed with me has been unsuccessful in their home school due to extreme emotional and behavioral disabilities.
Despite the challenges that my students face, they are amazing kids! They are fun-loving, strong and eager to learn. We have built our classroom from scratch this year and are working to make it a welcoming place for my kiddos to progress and meet their goals!
My Project
My young students have significant emotional/behavioral disorders: some as a result of trauma and others are just missing critical skills.
Quite simply, social skills are a struggle for my students.
Most kids naturally learn social skills such as taking turns, accepting "no", being flexible and working with others. However, students in my class demonstrate deficits in these areas and instead show BIG emotions that often keep them from maintaining relationships and remaining in class to learn. Therefore, they need extra instruction on these subjects so we can develop the skills necessary.
We are requesting a variety of social skills books recommended by behavior therapists and school counselors to enhance our classroom library and our social skills lessons. I plan to directly teach each skill by reading a book each week and working with my students to create ways to apply these skills in and out of our classroom.
