We are a successful small school in a small, rural farming community in Indiana. The staff in our building work every day to create an educationally rich environment that pushes each one of our students as individuals. We focus on small group learning and/or individualized learning.
Our students are excited, creative and fully engaged in the learning process.
They want to grow and learn more about the world around them. The students come from a variety of backgrounds and home environments but they are always striving to reach their full potential as future community leaders.
My Project
Fifth graders have big emotions. Their bodies are starting to change, they are feeling things they don't quite understand, and some of them are facing challenges outside of school not of their own making. I believe these materials will allow me to better reach my students social and emotional needs.
Being able to both process and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions is one of the key factors in how successful a child will be as an adult in today's world.
By fifth grade, my students mostly know "the right answer" when it comes to handling themselves in certain situations but sometimes lack the self-control and empathy in the heat of the moment. My hope is that by providing more read alouds and discuss opportunities through these texts, I will be able to help my students become more social and emotionally aware. Thus increasing the odds of student success as they move on to jr. high and eventually the real world.
