My students need books at their current reading levels so they can become proficient readers. My students are 2-3 years behind in reading and need books to practice with.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have a college bound classroom. We start each day by remembering that fair is not equal but that fair is everyone getting what they need to be successful. We focus on working together to make sure everyone is learning and working toward going onto college.
My students come from the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Most of my students live in public housing. Most people would view my students as less likely to make it to college and victims of poverty. I like to view my students as the smart scholars that they are. They have unlimited and sometimes untapped potential but they are all very bright and eager to learn. We do not have many resources but what we do have we use wisely. We treat each other with respect in our classroom. The students are high energy and come in each morning ready to learn. Though our school is in the center of a very impoverished neighborhood it is full of laughter, joy, and caring teachers. There is never a dull moment. My students take pride in their school and being in my classroom and will tell you every chance that they get that they are going to college.
My Project
My student are an average of two and a half years behind in reading when they come into my classroom. With so many students behind in reading and so many different reading levels it is important that students spend time reading books and their specific reading levels so they can progress and become proficient readers. With the books from this project my students will be able to read books at their own reading levels. Currently, I read aloud to my students for all of our language arts because I have books that are too advanced for my students. I want my students to be able to spend time reading themselves because reading aloud to students does not improve reading as fast as students actually reading books. However, I do not have books for them to read. With new books at their levels my students can spend more time reading books that they like at their own level and in turn become more proficient readers.
My students will be able to read books that they are interested in that are at their current reading levels.
This will enable my students to get closer to closing the 2-3 year learning gap that they face. They are currently 2-3 years behind in reading but with new books, practice, and patience I hope to have 100% of my students reading on grade level by the end of the year. These books mean the difference between literate and literate to my students.
