My Students

I meet kids every year who say they hate reading. But once they find a book that they choose and that speaks to them, they see that it's not about disliking reading - it's about discovering what you like to read. My students will love to read, but they need books that interest them to get there.

The students I work with are excited when they have opportunities to be involved in creating their learning process.

When we give them the opportunity to choose their own reading materials and start their own book clubs, students take ownership of their own education. Helping my middle schoolers see that they actually can enjoy reading is one of my favorite things about my job. But many students in my class don't have access to books they want to read at home. No kid should be discouraged from reading just because they may not immediately have access to the right book for them. As a school community, we try to help instill this love of reading by giving students opportunities to read with their peers in student created book clubs. The key to making these book clubs a success is having books on the shelf that reflect student interests and experiences.

My Project

With shelves packed with fun and engaging books for middle schoolers, my students will be able to discover the power of reading. These students will be able to lead their own discussions about books they choose to read and come to see the value in reading books from all genres.

The first step to getting students to fall in love with reading is to show them that it's all about choosing the right book for them.

With your generous donation, these kids will be provided with the opportunity to explore new worlds and new experiences. As their love of reading grows, so will their love of learning- and that is priceless.
