I work in a low-income school. All my students come with different challenge they face each day. Challenges range from not eating dinner the previous night to not having a pair of clean clothes to wear. Even though students face these challenges every day, they always come to school ready to learn. They know that in our classroom, everyone is welcome and loved.
In our class, we focus on learning powers (collaborating, persevering, curious, self-mange and reflect).
We use our learner powers every day, and face challenges we may come across and my students come ready to face those challenges. They use their learner powers to become independent learners and problem solvers both inside and out of the classroom. We also have been working on Toolbox Tools to help us regulate our feelings. Students will learn 12 different tools and hand signal for each tool.
My Project
When schools closed in March, some student's world came to a halt. School is a safe place for students. A place they can go to be loved and cared for. School is more then a learning place, it is their home. To help student with life outside of school, my school started implementing Toolbox. Toolbox is a research-based social-emotional learning curriculum. It teaches critical social competencies necessary for academic and life success such as: resiliency, self-management, and responsible decision-making skills. There are 12 tools in all and students learn a new tool about every month. I want to provide students with a visual of each tool. The tape measure, level tool, yarn balls, pencil, watch, garbage can, keys, and flashlight are all tools in the toolbox. Having a physicals object will helps students remember the different strategies they have available to them. The tool bag will help keep all our tools organized in our classrooms calming corner.
Our classroom environment has changed as well.
All students now have a device and state testing can be done in the classroom rather then the computer lab. All the assessments we do require sound. Headphones can be expensive and not all families can afford it. My students also have iPad and not all the headphones will fit into the headphone jack because of the case. Providing headphones for students allows parents not to worry and it allows students to hear on their state assessments without distracting others around them. The reusable pockets allow worksheets to be inserted and students can use the same piece of paper over and over. I use these pockets for math so students don't have to re-draw the same thing over. We can focus more on the concepts rather then drawing the needed thing.
