Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children learn by doing! I am teaching my 21st century students to be active participants in their own learning and in our society. We live in a world that depends on technology and I want to teach my students to strive to create it, not just be passive consumers of it.

I teach a group of 3rd grade Gifted Students in an inner-city school in a large metropolitan city.

A large percentage of students at my school come from low-income households and thus all students have access to the free lunch program. Many students do not have access to technology that will help them succeed in today's world. My students are enthusiastic learners with a great deal of potential. My job is to prepare them to be an active part of our world, to speak the language of technology and to understand that they can create the technology and the future they want.

My Project

The tablet and the Dash robot that I am requesting will allow my students to learn about computer programming and robotics. With the materials, my students will explore block-based coding using an application that interfaces with the robots. This will provide students with a concrete, visual model of what they are creating and will help them learn more easily how to understand the logic behind computer programming.

These tools will help my students apply critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and teamwork.

Interacting with something they create will promote their self-confidence and will inspire them to continue to create. These materials will demonstrate how Science and Math are so closely integrated in real life. These materials will prepare my students to be tech-literate, an essential skill in today's world.
