Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population. Living in a densely populated area of the city leaves very little room for organized sports. Our running club gives students the opportunity to participate in an after school program to promote health, exercise, and a team sport.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles from downtown Los Angeles, a city working on providing more green space.

We are a Title One school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds.

My Project

Track and field may look like an individual sport but on the contrary, besides it promoting individual growth it also promotes sportsmanship. A few colleagues and I coach our school's running team on Thursdays and Fridays after school. We invite students from kinder to 5th grade to participate and log in their weekly miles. For every full marathon, each student completes (approximately 26 miles) students are awarded a certificate and incentive.

From this group of students, we invite an elite core team to compete in local 5K/10K marathons.

In the past two years, some of our students have placed in their individual age groups. We'd like to prepare more of our students to compete in these local races as a team. The equipment requested will help us train our students to become stronger, more flexible, agile and ultimately better their individual and group running times. Endurance is key when it comes to running and these materials will help achieve that.

We've noticed that participants in our running team become overall better students. They also exhibit more tolerance with each other and are more focused during the school day. Although the races are for individual running time we train as a group/ team and students have formed friendships beyond the classroom. Students run in small groups to improve each other's endurance, help track each other's miles and exercise together. These additional resources will only help to motivate our runners to improve themselves and the team as a whole.
