My students attend a Title I school and the vast majority of them are from low-income households.
Some of them face struggles and hardships that no child should ever have to deal with, but at school, they can feel safe and accepted.
Regardless of our students' dispositions, our school and district set high goals for student achievement because we know that with the right instruction and motivation, our students can achieve anything to which they put their brilliant minds! Our students always rise to the occasion with soaring scores, and I want to reward them for their efforts.
My Project
Students in my high-poverty school do not have adequate access to books. I often try to find ways to check out multiple copies of chapter books for them to explore and do activities and reports on, but most libraries only have certain titles or not enough copies. If I had my own class set of books, the students would feel a sense of ownership. It would also grant them access as they need it rather than having to wait for availability.
Reading is an essential skill for life.
The Magic Tree House series takes students on a journey through historically accurate stories told by fun, fictional characters. My students love the series, and I know they would take pride in having their own class set. Having class sets of chapter books that are interesting and on level for my students will help them become lifelong readers.
