Becoming Bluestem Readers!

Help me give my students a chance to participate in the Bluestem Reading Challenge!

My Project

My students attend an urban PK-8 elementary school. My students love to read and to share what they are reading with their peers. My upper elementary students would like to vote for the Bluestem Award. The Bluestem Award is voted on by upper elementary students who live in Illinois and is awarded to the author that has the most votes from students. There is a wonderful list of books that the students can choose from to cast their vote. Of course, to vote they need to read the books. My students did this program last year and really loved it. It would be amazing to start the year with the books on the shelf ready to go for the students.

My school is one of the most diverse schools in our city.

New books are always exciting for students to read! While there are a handful of the books that I can read to the students during our library class, there are chapter books that they need to read on their own. Gaining access to these new and exciting titles will allow my students to read the books, connect with the authors, and connect with each other.

The books on the Bluestem Nominee book list are selected by librarians around the state of Illinois because of their relevance and connections for students. The bonus here for all of my students is that once the voting is over next spring, the books can be made available for all students to read and enjoy. I am requesting a variety of hardcover books and paperbacks, with extra copies of the graphic novels as they are so popular! In total, I am asking for 36 books, as I am confident that many of my students will want to read these books!
