Becoming Birdwatchers

My students need 4 binoculars to observe birds. They need journals to record the data. Benches will provide seating for outdoor observations. Bird feeders, bird baths, and seeds will attract the birds.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are K.I.D.S. They are knowledgeable, inquisitive, determined and successful. The school they attend serves a low income area. For many students the school sometimes is the most consistent part of their day. Unfortunately, in the last five years that hasn’t been very consistent. New teachers make up between 61-76 percent of the staff each year. This is changing now but the students have accelerated at having positive attitudes towards the school. There is a great pride in my students. We have a 95% attendance rate and very low mobility. My school is located in a rural area. We are the hidden gems of the school district.

The students in my class are thirsty for knowledge.

They come to school ready to learn. Seventy-three percent of the students in the class began our adventure into second grade far below grade level. This hasn’t stopped them from wanting to learn. In fact, it has fueled them. They have big goals, ideas, and hearts.

My Project

The bird feeding station, bird bath, and the variety of bird seeds I am seeking will be used to attract birds for students to observe. The binoculars will allow students to view the birds from afar and in greater details. The bird journal notebook will allow students to record their observations. This activity will be able to be done all year round. It can be done inside and outdoors. The window bird feeder will allow students a close up look of birds from within the classroom. The benches requested will provide seating when outdoor viewing the birds from the binoculars.

Bird watching is a cross-curricular activity that combines science, math and language arts.

This project will allow my students a hands-on learning experience. Collecting data in the bird journal notebook and researching birds in the bird guide will give my students exciting practice in reading and writing. While observing birds at the feeding station, students will get to appreciate nature. This is important because I have students and parents tell me they do not get to go outside much because they live in an unsafe environment.

The addition of the bird watching area also helps to beautify the school. The bird baths and multi bird feeding station will attract birds while also being attractive. Not only will my students be able to observe this area from outside our large window, but nine other classrooms will as well. Being able to go outside to observe the birds and sit on the benches engages students in learning. This breaks up the monotony of the classroom. It creates a calm, engaging place to learn. Students this year and years to come will have an inspiring and unique classroom experience when they become birdwatchers.
