This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach grades 6-8 at a very low income school. I have five sections of general music during the day and then 2-3 days before school, I teach choir. There is a lot of interest in music among the students, but I do not have enough supplies to meet all of their individual needs.

What do my students, and musicians from long ago, have in common? A lack of supplies and resources. Musicians such as Beethoven and Mozart often had little money growing up, paired with a growing desire to play piano and compose music. My students come from a very low income area, just as these musicians might have, and are showing a great interest in piano playing! A lot of the pre-teens would love to take piano lessons, but their parents cannot afford them. This is where I came up with the idea to integrate a keyboard unit in my curriculum. We have 9 keyboards now, and it would be great to eventually have one keyboard per student in our class. They love to learn songs ranging from Fur Elise by Beethoven to playing songs by ear from the radio. Most pre-teens are even composing their own pieces and teaching other students! This would be a great benefit in our classroom if we had a keyboard per student.

I am asking for 5 keyboards to add to our 9 we have previously bought. There is such a desire to learn keyboard in my class I have added it into our curriculum and also use it as an incentive to complete assignments and work. They have headphones for quiet practice time as well and really love the independence of hearing their own music. It would greatly enhance my piano units to have more kids on individual keyboards.

You will make it possible for my students to pursue their music dreams in the classroom that could not be achieved any other way. By providing my students with the supplies they need to be successful, who knows, you could be supporting the next Beethoven!
