Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know what it's like to enter a new country and school without speaking the language?
Many of my students are new to the United States with limited English acquisition.
These students are called SLIFEs (students with limited or interrupted formal education) and often are very nervous about being in a new country. School is overwhelming however, my students are very dedicated to their studies and strive to do the best they can with limited English. These students will go to tutors, ask for help, as well as seek extra help (on their own time) through paraprofessionals in the building who assist with their work. These dedicated students can also have jobs outside of school (up to 40-50 hours a week!) and work to support their families while attending classes during the day.
My Project
Due to budget cuts and reallocations, students are not given a hard version of an organizational planner to set them up for academic success. Many of my students are not recording their homework or tasks that need completion and not turning in assignments on time. In addition, students do not know how to properly manage their schedule (work, home, school etc) and just "remember" it in their heads.
By providing students with the academic planners, I will be able to teach students organizational skills both and time management.
This will allow my students to learn how to properly manage their time as well as keep up to date with their responsibilities both in and outside of school. With this added skill students will know what additional tasks or responsibilities that they are able to take on. This skill will go beyond the classroom and their high school experience and stay with them for the rest of their life.
This tool will be a vital resource to help transition students back into school after 18 months of hybrid/remote learning which created a lot of negative learning experiences.
