This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The children who walk through our school's doors each day are not just students; they are super readers, powerful writers and mathematicians in the making. I work in the Bronx area. It is a new school that doesn’t have much funding. The majority of our families live below the poverty line, are immigrants, with their own difficult situations and obstacles to over come. That, however, doesn’t change the fact that our new neighborhood school isn’t just a school.
It’s a community where we help each other instill good citizen behaviors in our students and give them a love for learning.
Teachers give up time, stay late and provide parents with workshops in literacy to make reading fun for children. We are always there for our families and students. We have high expectations for them. We want our students to learn in a fun, positive and exciting environment. We want our school to be a place where you want to be, not have to be. My students are eager to learn and succeed. I hope to keep that love for learning growing inside my students.
My Project
I teach children in kindergarten through third grade. I specifically work with students who needs extra academic support and students who are learning the English language. These materials [Fiction and Nonfiction Paired Passages grades 1- 3] will give children access to their grade level materials in a small group setting with teacher support, as well as giving students opportunities to read with a partner, discuss high-order thinking questions and fill out graphic organizers. The graphic organizer will help students organize their thoughts and show their thinking. The cards are colorful and the passages are interesting. The Magnet Teacher Charts [large graphic organizers] will be used as a tool to support students’ learning.
English Language Development Skill-Building Centers will give students a chance to apply what they have learned and complete different reading and writing activities independently.
This a fun way to support children’s learning. The activities are colorful, will keep students’ attention and help build the skills they need to understand grade level text. The goal is to teach children reading and writing skills in small groups and gradually release the support so they can become strong independent readers.
