Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach second grade in a low income, high mobility urban school. I teach every subject except for PE, Art and Music.

The students I teach do not have the opportunities to experience a lot of nature in their daily lives. Because of the urban area where we live, the children don't see many wild animals that might be seen on a nature trail. Even though they don't have the opportunity to experience nature, the subject is still of high interest for children of this age.

I would like the supplies to bring an author and illustrator, who is a real naturalist to our classroom. Jim Arnosky is just that person! He is a great man whose books bring nature alive to his readers. When reading his nonfiction books, second graders can become the naturalist and pretend that they are doing the research for the books. Mr. Arnosky's fiction stories also are enriched with many factual tales of animals and nature. I would love to do a nature and author study with a wide variety of Jim Arnosky's books.

With your help, my students could be drawn to nature by an expert. The more this generation learns and loves our beautiful wildlife, the more likely it is they will take care of it for the next generation. Help me encourage understanding and love about nature and wildlife in my urban students.
