My Students

Our school is a Boston Public Pilot School that is also an International Baccalaureate School. This is the only BPS IB school that is an "IB For All" program (i.e. all students, regardless of level, are taught the IB curriculum and have the opportunity to pursue an IB Diploma.).

The race/ethnicity is a mix of mainly Chinese and African-American students, with a few Hispanic and Caucasian students.

The languages spoken are English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, and Spanish. Ages range from 15 to 21. Over 95% of our students are qualified for free lunch, free breakfast, and free public transportation. In spite of the many challenges our kids face, they are still willing to work hard and continue to have a love of school. They know that school will provide them with opportunities to be successful in life. My ability to create science lessons that relate to my students' lives and make them life-long learners has always been at the core of my teaching practice.

My Project

This is my 18th year of teaching science to 8th-12th graders in both regular education and special needs classrooms at my school. I feel it is time to take the next step professionally. This grant will serve as a scholarship for me to obtain my National Board Certification for Teaching in Biology. This certification process is nationally recognized as one of the most rigorous teaching evaluation processes offered by a third party service.

For certification I will be required to show evidence of 5 propositions: (1) a commitment to students and their learning, (2) knowledge of the subject of Biology and an ability to monitor student learning, (3) systematic thinking about my practice and the ability to learn from experience, and (5) a commitment to being a member of a learning community.

Fulfillment of these propositions will be assessed from my submitted artifacts and the passing of an online assessment evaluated by the National Board. Artifacts consist of recorded classroom teaching videos, student work, lesson plans, and more. The process may take me up to 5 years to fully complete. Fulfillment of this project will help me grow professionally via this certification process.

Please consider helping me fulfill this project as it will challenge me to complete a top ranked, nationally recognized evaluation on my teaching of students.
