I need funding assistance to attend the Teachers College Reading Institute at Columbia University. I am requesting assistance so that I can learn about the foundations of quality reading instruction.

My Students

I teach an amazing group of 2nd graders who are eager to learn and share their knowledge! My students love to read and write and share their favorite stories with each other. Many of my students face challenges in their lives outside of school, such as homelessness and poverty. They deserve a safe place to learn and a high quality curriculum that will help them meet their goals. They enter the classroom with a smile on their face and an intrinsic motivation to challenge themselves as learners.

My Project

I am requesting professional development funds so that I can learn to be a better teacher of reading. The reading institute at the Teachers College of Columbia University is a workshop for educators who are committed to turning classrooms into richly literate reading and writing workshops. During this workshop I will learn about the central role of curriculum development and planning in the teaching of reading, units of study in reading workshop, comprehension strategy instruction, the importance of assessment-based instruction, the role of the read-aloud book, methods of holding our students accountable for doing their best work, helping students grow ideas about literature, and classroom structures that support inquiry and collaboration.
