My Students

I started my teaching career as a NYC Teaching Fellow just last year. I teach at a very large New York City public high school in Ozone Park, Queens. My students come from diverse backgrounds, and live in various parts of the city. At this point in the school year most of my students have switched to be fully remote, therefore they do not go into the school building. They are comprised of special and general education students, all with unique needs.

My Project

Students have had a loss of learning over the past year, and need support in adjusting back to in-person learning. All of our students want to learn, but sometimes they get distracted and have trouble focusing on their academics. By offering small incentives, it creates great motivation for our students to stay focused, and on-track during class. Knowing that they can have their name written on a star, and posted on our bulletin-board, it is a constant motivator to encourage positive behavior.

Having stress relief objects, and simple sensory fidget gadgets, allows students to redirect their energy when they find themselves needing to move around.

The end goal is to help students assimilate back to in-person learning. We can help our students adjust by removing any barriers that might get in the way. This may look like the need to get up, move around, and distracting their classmates. Positive behavior in the classroom will help build student confidence, enhance the classroom environment, and as a result help students grow academically.
