This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at what is called a school of choice. We provide an alternative to the traditional high school setting. We cater to students whose circumstances require flexible hours, personalized instruction, immense emotional support, and a small-campus setting that allows us to meet them exactly where they are.
Our students realize the importance of graduation, and they come to us with that goal in mind.
They are a diverse group of learners, and each brings a unique set of talents and circumstances.
My Project
Oral histories are a powerful tool in archiving the stories of our communities, our cultures, our friends, and our families. I would like to give my students the opportunity to explore the stories of their own community through interviewing and writing about someone who can share their unique perspective.
Students will get to actively chronicle and pass down the knowledge, traditions, hardships, and celebrations of someone who inspires them.
Reading about and discussing important themes in class will be made even more powerful when students can interview individuals whose stories embody those themes.
