Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In our classroom, books are the foundation for building community and bridges that connect us to one another. We get to know book characters who experience the same feelings and situations that we go through and meet characters with different life experiences. We learn to understand ourselves better and express empathy for others through literature.

Our classroom library is always growing because I believe books must match my students' identities and invite them to meet new identities from around the world.

Filling my bookshelves with readers' requests and books that highlight diversity is essential. Can you imagine how meaningful it is when students can see themselves positively represented in the books they read? Books like, "Everything in Its Place: A Story of Books and Belonging" and "The Real Deal" have characters that my students can relate to. My fourth grade readers relish books that invite them to get to know characters with physical attributes, hobbies, and challenges that are similar to their own lives. Other books like "We Could Be Heroes" and "New Kids and Underdogs" will give my students a window into a new world that encourages compassion for others.

My students will be giggling when they receive a “Take Me To Your Reader” bookmark. It’s scented, colorful and silly! A pure delight for fourth-grade readers.

Together, we can support literacy instruction that reflects students' identities and celebrates the beauty of diversity in our classroom and beyond.
