Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th-grade students live in a low-income community. My school is a Title I school, in Staten Island, where 100 percent of the students qualify for free lunch. My students face many challenges beyond that of financial issues. Many come from one parent households, live in public housing, come from broken homes and some are in the foster care system. They often come in unprepared and unable to complete homework assignments because of the lack of resources or no help at home. However, despite all their hardships, many of them show up, ready and eager to learn and socialize.
In spite of all their hardships, I am inspired by them daily.
They are spirited, entertaining, charming and eager to learn. But, it isn't easy for them as they start the race of life facing serious obstacles. Their circumstances should not preclude their chances for a good education. I want them to have a leveled playing field. I am thrilled to be their teacher and I want to offer them the best of me and anything else that I can provide for them.
My Project
I teach reading and writing in a 5th grade ICT classroom. Over time, I have developed a great collection of books that I know my students will be excited to read. However, I have nowhere to put the books.
The books I have collected need a place to stay, and my students need an organized and welcoming classroom library.
Having a bookshelf will enable me to create a space that will be easily accessible to my students.
My classroom library is coming together nicely. I am so excited to see my students' faces when they discover all the new and exciting books. Books need a place, and a bookshelf would help me house plenty of book bins for my students to have easy access to our classroom books.
