My Students
I teach music to students who are on the Autism Spectrum. They are in high school, but function on a pre-kindergarten to 2rd grade level. My students are involved in a choir as well as learning the foundations of music.
The school I work in has 100% economically disadvantaged students who all have moderate to severe special needs.
Music is way for students of all abilities to express their feelings and emotions. Students on the Autism Spectrum don't always have the words to communicate and music is a way for them to do so!
My Project
In my class, I plan on using the bongo drums to teach the students about rhythm. Each student will be able to use their own drum to show what they have learned during my class.
Many of my students do not have the words to communicate what they're feeling; I'm hoping they can use the drums to express their feelings.
Music is a universal language and I want my students to have all the opportunities to learn and communicate using the drums. Music is way for students of all abilities to express their feelings and emotions. Students on the Autism Spectrum don't always have the words to communicate and music is a way for them to do so!
