Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are almost all students of color, mostly immigrants or children of immigrants, and mostly English language-learners. Many of them are living without important members of their immediate families, separated by distance or time. Many of our students feel divided between the communities and languages of this country, and the communities and languages of their birth countries or the birth countries of their parents. They are wonderful young people whose connections to family, to culture and to home may have been disrupted or altered.
We want to help our students connect with each other, with us, and with themselves by offering a space where they can create and explore what is a profound love for most of them: music.
No matter where our students were born, they love music. Interacting with music is a way to feel heard, to feel represented, and to connect with history and culture.
My Project
Some of our students love music and dream of making their own, but do not have access to the right resources. Some of our students are separated from what they consider their primary cultures, countries, and in some cases their primary families. And, some of our students struggle to connect with the schoolwork, their fellow students and the school itself.
Creating a music production club is going to address all three of these individual and communal needs.
By providing a space for students to learn with tools like a keyboard, audio interface, and professional headphones and make the music they love, we value and strengthen connections between students, between students and the school, between students and their cultures, and the community as a whole.
