Bean Bags, Tennis Balls, and Hula Hoops! (In Music Class?)

My students need materials (ribbons, beanbags, and hula hoops) that encourage movement to music and help them visualize musical concepts.

My Students

My students attend a large elementary school, with a student population of roughly 680 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. In this sizeable school setting, my students are hungry for opportunities to show their individual creativity through hands-on learning.

My students love opportunities to not only listen to and make music, but to move to music and explore musical concepts through movement.

They light up when they hear they will be moving to music in class or using materials to enhance the ways they can demonstrate musical form, style, tempo, or dynamics. My students love all aspects of interacting with music, but moving as they learn brings them a special kind of joy.

My Project

While my students regularly use their imaginations as they move to music, teaching tools such as ribbons, tennis balls, and plates can make the experience more real and enjoyable, helping students to truly internalize what they are learning. Pretending they are ice skating to the "Skaters Waltz" or "Ice Skating" from Charlie Brown is easier with paper plates on the ground to help students (safely) slide across the carpet.

My students do some of their best learning when they are able to move to music and learn through their movement.

As my students get older, the concepts they learn in music class get more complex. Having ways of physically moving to and showing these concepts makes learning easier and more relatable for students. Squeezing four students into one hula hoop helps students visualize how four sixteenth notes fit into just one beat of music. Musical form can be shown through various movements or objects of various colors.
