Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
To help my students build confidence, empathy, and a strong classroom community, I am launching a social-emotional learning project using the book Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli. This relatable and engaging novel encourages students to be their best selves, treat others with kindness, and reflect on the kind of people they want to become.
We will pair this project with a “Bucket Filler” activity, helping students learn how their words and actions affect others.
Each student will create a personal bucket to display in the classroom and participate in daily or weekly opportunities to write kind notes to one another. As part of this, students will complete a reflection titled “I Am a Bucket Filler Angel When…” where they describe a specific way they plan to spread kindness and support their classmates.
Through reading, journaling, goal-setting, class discussions, and creative expression, students will explore essential character traits like kindness, responsibility, and perseverance. This project sets the tone for the year and helps all students, especially those who may struggle socially or emotionally, feel seen, valued, and empowered.
