This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are smart, creative, hardworking, and community-minded. They are determined and resilient. They have big dreams for their futures and many will be the first in their families to graduate from high school and attend college. Since the pandemic, many of my students are carrying multiple loads. They labor, not only as students, but as workers, caregivers, and confidants. They are navigating virtual learning, supporting their younger siblings' online learning, taking care of their household chores, and working part-time jobs to help with their family income. Many of their parents have lost their jobs and many have seen family members become ill and/or pass during the pandemic. They are carrying so much weight, certainly, much more than any teenager should carry.
My Project
Through the Breathe 4 Change Yoga and SEL*F training I will gain tools and community support to help me develop a sustainable, lifelong mindfulness and yoga practice. My goal is to share these practices with my students and school community. Since the pandemic, many of my students have shared feeling isolated, anxious, afraid, and overwhelmed. I have felt all of these feelings as well, and it is through mindfulness and yoga, that I have found some ease. My hope is that I can support my students by teaching mindfulness, social emotional learning, and movement practices that they can add to their health and wellness practices.
Through the B4C training, I will learn to facilitate mindfulness, social emotional learning, and movement practices and be able to provide both in-person and online wellness experiences for my students, co-teachers, and community members -- all with the hope of building community, fostering vulnerability, and developing social emotional intelligence.
As part of the Breath 4 Change training, I will also be joining a community of like-minded educators and leaders committed to enhancing the well-being of educators, students, and families this school year and beyond.
