My Students
Many of my students do not know a world outside of the city in which they live, let alone what live would be like if they had been born on a different continent. With resources to teach the students what other children have to go through in other countries, their eyes would be opened exponentially.
My students live in a major city in Pennsylvania.
The school is a public school, but has a music focus. They come from a variety of backgrounds and ethnic groups, which adds a lot to the culture of the school. The students have a thirst for knowledge, but do not possess the money or resources to obtain that knowledge on their own. They are incredible 7th grade students and deserve the best that education has to offer. Turning 13, they are at a pivotal age, which can determine the positive or negative paths they may take in life.
My Project
My students were recently introduced to the Invisible Children Organization, which helps children in Northern Uganda who have been faced with war and forced to be child soldiers. Up until recently, my students did not know what Uganda was, and now, all they want to do is learn more and help those students. Through meager bake sales and a Walk-a-Thon event, my 7th grade students have raised a small amount of money to donate to the non-profit organization. With these resources, I can teach them more of the history behind the war in Uganda, as well as the history and ways to make a change for the future of Uganda. I would also like to do interactive projects, commercials, and song parodies with the help of the camcorder. My students have a passion to change the lives of the students in Uganda, and I want to foster that for them by possessing resources that would teach them more about the conflict, and at the same time help them to determine their own futures.
How often do you see 7th graders, 13 year olds that care about more than their own family and friends?
Well my students do! They want to enact change in Uganda. They want to raise money, raise awareness, and gain knowledge for people less fortunate than themselves. They realize that they could have mad the misfortune of being born in a war-torn area, and want to know more, and do more in order to be the change they want to see in the world.
