My students need to experience, apply, and extend their knowledge and understanding of government through participating in a state government conference.
How do you motivate a student who doesn't see the point of a class? By offering that student some choice in their learning. Performance Based learning is about allowing students to show what they have learned through many different modes. Our students are new to this concept but they are demonstrating the power of a student centered learning environment.
Our school works to inspire our student's thirst to learn and encourage real world experiences and relevancy.
The students come from many different schools and backgrounds, but many share the belief that they "cant learn." Most haven't had the opportunity to try in a different way.
My Project
Students will gain firsthand knowledge of the functions of government. They will see the process of legislation in action, speak with legislators, and interact with government in a way no textbook can ever do. Each session offers a chance to experience law making and enforcing. This trip meets Colorado State standards for government and students will take what they learn and apply that knowledge in a service learning project upon returning to the classroom. As they do so, students will be meeting Colorado State standards for Language Arts as well and will apply those skills to their service learning project.
This offers students an opportunity to become a responsible citizens and utilize the skills necessary to influence public policy.
