This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take that away from you." - BB King
Can you remember how it feels to be "hooked" on a book or to be so invested in a book or article you are reading that you couldn't possibly stop?
My NYC middle school students come from low-income households and attend a public (6-12) school in the Bronx.
They are truly a diverse and exceptionally special group of learners that unfortunately lack exposure and opportunities to get their hands-on fascinating and engaging educational reading materials.
Because many of our students fall into the lowest one-third in both NYC and NYS for literacy, they have to deal with countless obstacles in their quest for high achievement on school and state assessments. As a school community, our teachers all share the same goal: to enrich the lives of our students through learning and support them on their path to success.
My Project
A year-long class subscription to Science World will help give students real-world connections to science topics through reading. The monthly magazine subscriptions would be used and shared with all of our middle school super scientists and allow the incorporation of varied level current event articles into weekly instruction. Every Science World issue has a spectrum of high-interest science articles that connect and relate the middle school content to real world events and phenomena.
The magazines not only provide exciting and unique articles but also include links to engaging videos and extension materials and projects. There are countless teacher tools that allow for differentiation to help promote an increase in literacy to support all of our students. As you can see, this magazine subscription is an invaluable resource that can ignite a spark in our students to learn more about the world around them through reading.
Any donations to this project can truly make a world of a difference.
We must prepare our future leaders of this younger generation for success in the real world. This is an incredible and motivating way to show our students what is going on in the world around them through the lens of science. It will undoubtedly allow them to make connections between the classroom and their own cultures and lives, which is a key step in creating lifelong learners.
