Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from the Fruitvale and San Antonio neighborhoods in East Oakland, though some students may travel from as far as San Jose and Vallejo in order to take advantage of the opportunities our academy provides.

My students are a diverse group of learners who have experienced many traumatic life events such as loss of siblings and parents to gang-related violence, dealing with eating disorders and so much more.

They are also capable mathematicians, engaged readers and writers and budding scientists and future medical professionals that love learning.

Skill levels are quite varied in my classroom. Our population is mostly children of color, a large percentage of which are English Language Learners and students with special needs. More than 91% of students qualify for free lunch. Every day, I provide social-emotional curriculum that meets them where they are cognitively and emotionally, so that they can engage in the rigor and challenges of our school's academic curriculum. I work tirelessly to make their goals a reality by addressing the whole child and their diverse needs.

My Project

With all of the challenges my students face in their daily lives, having a healthy, safe, and cool learning environment at school should not be one of them. Our school is in a building that is shared with other 2 schools and does not have air conditioning. My classroom has large windows that project heat and when temperatures hit the 80's and 90's my classroom starts to feel like a sauna and it becomes unbearable at times. With conditions like these my students struggle to concentrate due to headaches and overheating. I've tried to pacify the heat with different types of fans but the large fans tend to be too noisy and even knock off posters from the walls while smaller fans just don't do enough to keep the classroom cool.

I want to provide my students with a portable air conditioner to help keep our classroom at cool temperatures and provide a safe and comfortable environment for learning.

Having a portable air conditioner will provide a cool and safe learning environment that will help my students concentrate and increase the chances of reaching their goals. Another benefit of having a portable air conditioner will be the improvement of the air quality in my classroom. This will help create a healthy, safe environment by providing clean filtered air and will especially benefit those with allergies and respiratory conditions. Every student deserves a comfortable, safe space to learn, please help me provide one for my students.
