My Students

My students are an audacious group of inquisitive 6-9 year olds attending a public Montessori school on the West Side of Chicago. This group engages with materials at their own level and at their own interest level.

Students are presented a global introduction of the world, helping them learn how all parts of our universe are connected.

Students will build a sense of purpose in the world by learning about all which their curiosities will drive them towards.

We will expand our minds and hearts this year. I hope to foster a love of learning and build kind, compassionate citizens that are joyful and inquisitive learners.

My Project

What will we cook today - Baking naan to support their studies of Central Asia, cooking a vegetable stew fresh from the garden, or preparing a recipe passed down from many generations of a student's family? The list is endless!

Everyday, students are invited to prepare food for the classroom as a part of our Montessori curriculum.

With the aid of a refrigerator, we can keep ingredients that need to be cool (such as milk, cheese, fruit, veggies) for baking bread or prepping snack for and by the students. They learn skills in independence and responsibility through this work.

Each day, students are encouraged to explore their curiosities of the world by studying communities near and far. To support their cultural studies research, students can build recipes from start to finish, using ingredients from their classroom garden to prepare food for the whole community.

By learning how to cook for a community, the students build social skills in sharing and respecting one another. We will also learn the importance of not wasting food through saving unused food in our fridge for future projects.
