My students need comic books with diverse characters that reflect the demographics of readers in my school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students understand the issues that we face as a nation and that they face as students of color living in the Bronx, and they are hungry for change. They are all super heroes in training.
I teach 9th graders in global history as well as an upper-class elective: History Through Comics.
My students are mostly people of color, low socio-economic status, and free or reduced lunch. My school has a growing number of ESL and Muslim students. The female students in my class came in knowing little about comics, but gravitated heavily toward the selections on this list because of the strong female depictions. In an era of increased Islamophobia, my Muslim students have expressed surprise and enjoyment for Ms. Marvel and her depiction of issues they face as young people with parents that hold more traditional Muslim values.
My Project
My ninth grade students use these comics as independent reading materials. Students have read previous volumes of the requested comics and have now requested these subsequent stories to continue reading. Students read projects and create summaries and reviews of them. The upperclassmen select comics they enjoy and analyze them for themes of shifting morality in post-modern America, changing national demographics, and representation of feminist issues.
This project will allow students to continue reading the stories that they already enjoy.
It will give my female students and students of color representation in their reading materials, validating their existence and encouraging them to become the future super heroes they can be.
