This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember reading your first book and falling in love with the story and feeling so proud that you read it all by yourself? This could be the year that this love story happens for my students! Leveled books would help my students to advance a whole year's reading level. Help make the love story come true.
My students struggle with reading but try so hard to learn.
All my students come from low income homes and books are not readily available as the local library is at least a mile away. Our school is an inner city public school in Philadelphia serving close to 600 children. The majority of our families come from Spanish speaking countries or Puerto Rico. This year we welcomed our first Asian speaking family at our school. We are a welcoming learning community with many outside agency partnerships under the guidance and supervision of our charismatic principal. The majority of our families have limited means and do not have computers at home for student use. Factors such as limited English proficiency, low income homes, no home computers or books, and limited parental literacy cause our children to be at risk and our in-school time is critically important to their learning.
My Project
My students need leveled books to accommodate varying reading levels and a mobile cart and storage bins to keep books organized for quick retrieval. My students would used the leveled reading books daily for guided reading. Having all the levels would ensure that reading instruction would be provided at their instructional levels. Having the storage bins would make it easy for us to access the appropriate levels quickly. Having the cart holding the bins would allow my students to visually see where they are on the reading continuum and give them direction about where they need to go to make additional progress. I plan to provide my students with a daily tracker so they can record the books we read together and this will allow them to be proud of the progress they are making.
These materials will ensure they are reading at their appropriate level and this will motivate them to read.
If they feel that they can read then they will fall in love with reading. This will give them the opportunity to fall in love with a promising future. I challenge you to be a guided reading guardian in this love of reading and future triangle!
