What can motivate an unmotivated student to read? A little friendly competition! Every year our school district holds a Battle of the Books competition with books that have won awards for being the best of the most current young reader's books.
My students are a highly diverse group of 5th graders from many different backgrounds.
Our school is a title-one school with over 50% of our students receiving free or reduced meals. Despite the low economic status of many of our students, our school has received many awards for being in the top 5% performing schools in the state of Washington! We accomplish that by focusing on one of the most important keys to student's success. That focus is getting students to read daily, both inside and outside of the classroom.
My Project
I am requesting copies of this coming year's Battle of the Books. Each of these books has been chosen as the best of the current young readers selections. My students will devour these books, learn them inside and out, and compete in the spring in a competition aimed at motivating students to read good quality books. Having multiple copies of each of these books will give my students quick access to a wide variety of genres and reading levels. These books will increase their fluency and comprehension levels, while providing good entertainment!
Your donation to this project will increase my students' participation levels in this competition and provide hours of great quality reading.
In this age of video games and social media distraction, these books will encourage my students to read and learn about the world around them. I can't wait to get these books into my students' hands!
